UHS Chancellor Khator Names Interim President of University of Houston-Downtown

University of Houston System Chancellor Renu Khator has named Michael A. Olivas as the interim president of University of Houston-Downtown (UHD), effective today. 

Olivas is the William B. Bates Distinguished Chair in Law at the University of Houston Law Center and Director of the Institute of Higher Education Law and Governance at the University of Houston. He has also served as associate dean of the Law Center. 

Highly respected as a legal scholar in the areas of immigration, higher education and the U.S. Supreme Court, Olivas has the noted distinction as the only elected member of both the American Law Institute and the National Academy of Education honor academies.

William Flores, former president of UHD, will continue on at the University as a tenured faculty member.  

A national search for the new president of UHD will begin immediately.
