Public Art of the University of Houston System is hosting its first ever film series titled “Art on Screen 21” on Saturday, April 10 at the UH Cullen Performance Hall.
The all-day event begins at 10 a.m. and features four films, as well as tours of select works in Public Art UHS’s permanent and temporary public art collections. Admission is free for current UH students, faculty and staff as well as for children under the age of 12. Tickets for visitors and guests start at $5 per screening. Click here to RSVP.
Inspired by the exploration and use of color in a variety of 20th-century art movements, “Art on Screen 21” focuses on movies that made significant cinematographic advancements through their use of color. The films showing include:
- “The Wizard of Oz” (1939)
- “Pleasantville” (1998)
- The Houston premiere of “Free Color,” a documentary following artist Carlos Cruz-Diez on his quest to realize his ultimate artwork (2020, directed by Alberto Arvelo)
- “The Dark Side of Oz,” a film and music experience pairing “The Wizard of Oz” with Pink Floyd’s 1973 album “The Dark Side of the Moon”
“‘Art on Screen 21’ offers a selection of curated films that explore concepts and ideas related to contemporary art and expand our appreciation of the artists and artworks in our permanent collection and temporary exhibitions such as ‘Color Field’, which features Spencer Finch’s ‘Back to Kansas,’ which draws inspiration from the vibrant technicolor scenes in ‘The Wizard of Oz,’” said María C. Gaztambide, Public Art UHS director and chief curator.

- 10:00 a.m.: Morning Art Tour
- 11:00 a.m.: Wizard of Oz (1939, PG, Adventure/Family/Fantasy, 1h 42min)
- 2:00 p.m.: Afternoon Art Tour
- 3:00 p.m.: Pleasantville (1998, PG-13, Comedy/Drama/Fantasy, 2h 4min)
- 6:00 p.m.: Evening Art Tour
- 7:00 p.m.: Free Color (2020, Documentary, 1h 10min)
- 8:30 p.m.: Dark Side of Oz (Wizard of Oz paired with Pink Floyd’s 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon, 1h 42min)
