UH System Mourns Passing of Regent Stephen Chazen

Dear UH System Colleagues,

The University of Houston System is mourning the sudden loss of Stephen “Steve” Chazen, a treasured member of the UH System Board of Regents.

Regent Chazen was a part of the UH System family. He earned his master’s degree from the University of Houston-Clear Lake and provided exceptional leadership to the UH System, having served on the Board of Regents since 2018. The UH System, our students and institutions are stronger as a result of his support and dedicated service.

Regent Chazen was widely known for his success as a businessman. He founded Magnolia Oil & Gas Corporation and served as its chairman, president and chief executive officer. Prior to that, he had a long tenure at Occidental Petroleum Corporation, serving as CEO until his retirement in 2016. Business was not his only passion. He leaves an incredible impact and legacy as a dedicated champion of education, health care and the environment.
