Student Pathways

The University of Houston System Student Pathways Program is designed to make all UH System institutions accessible to all first-time degree seeking undergraduate UH System students. This initiative supports the University of Houston System’s goal of providing greater access to UHS students and will enable students to progress more quickly toward the completion of their degrees at their home institutions by taking advantage of course opportunities that may be more available or convenient at one of the other UH System institutions.

Who qualifies and how many courses can a student complete?

Through the UHS Student Pathways program, first-time degree seeking undergraduate students enrolled at any of the four UH System universities, with the approval of their academic departments, are able to take up to six hours of courses toward their degree, at any of the UH system universities.

  • The courses may be taken during a single semester or in two different semesters. Currently, the program allows for a maximum of 6 hours during the student's academic career and the courses must apply to the student's degree at the home institution.

Step by step process

  1. The interested student should research the course offerings at the other three UH System universities. (Be sure you are not logged into your Student Center when you click the Class Schedule Search link since it is a public site that allows you to use the drop-down to easily search each institution's course offerings).
  2. Then connect with their academic advisor to secure approval and to confirm if the located course would be applicable to their current degree program requirements.
  3. After the course is confirmed; the student should complete the UHS Pathways Application (linked below) and then provide the signed form to their academic advisor along with proof of the pre-requisite(s) being completed if the course has pre-requisites listed
  4. The advisor will then complete their portion, and then secure a signature from the Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, or Dean to ensure the Residency Policy will not be an issue for students who may be in their last thirty hours prior to graduating.
  5. The advisor will then route the completed form along with the pre-requisite proof to the Pathways Coordinator at the home Institution.
  6. The host UHS Pathways Coordinator will then verify residency for tuition purposes and then route the approved and completed form to the UHS Pathways Coordinator at the host Institution.
    • If you are seeking to take a course at UH Main, UH Clear Lake or UH Victoria – the UHS Pathways Coordinator on those campuses will enroll you into your approved course(s). This process may take 3-5 business days.
    • If you are seeking to take a course at UH Downtown, the UHS Pathways Coordinator will seek the approval of the academic department and grant the student enrollment access. The student is then required to enroll themselves into the approved course(s). This process may take 5-7 business days.
  7. After enrollment is confirmed in the selected course(s), the student is then responsible for paying for the course(s) or making payment arrangements by the deadline posted at the host Institution.
    • Students utilizing Veteran Benefits may be able to utilize their benefits to cover the host costs depending on the type of benefits. Students must check with the Veteran staff at the host institution to determine eligibility and actions needed.
    • Students utilizing Financial Aid (grants, loans, or scholarships) at their home institution must make independent arrangements for payment of enrollment expenses at the host institution. The students home institution is NOT able pay the students tuition at the host institution. However, if utilizing Financial Aid then a consortium agreement may be completed and the host enrollment hours can be counted toward the students overall enrollment total at the home institution. It is ultimately the student’s responsibility to pay tuition and fee costs at host institution.
  8. There is no pathways application fee, and all university services at both the home and the host institution are available to students during the semesters in which they are enrolled in the program.
  9. Upon completion of the semester, Academic Records will run a query to find Pathways students enrolled for that semester and submit the electronic official transcript request via SPEEDE to the students home institution.

Participation in the Pathways Program does not waive academic requirements, and it does not guarantee seats in the courses. It only creates an opportunity for the eligible pathway participants to enroll in the approved course(s) during the Open Registration period at the host institution.

To apply for the program, please complete the UH System Student Pathways Program Application.

Frequently Asked Questions

The program allows any currently enrolled undergraduate student from any of our UH System schools to take up to 6 hours at another UH System school. For example, a student at UH Downtown could enroll in courses at UH Clear Lake (and vice versa) with approval.
Most students are needing a course for their degree program that is not being offered at their home institution during the term they are seeking; thus, they may seek to take that course at another UH System institution.
No. The UH Pathways program is only for undergraduate students.
Yes, if you are an undergraduate student. In addition to completing the form and approval process, you are highly encouraged to contact the international services office at your home institution to obtain a letter of co-current enrollment. This documentation notifies us that you are approved to take courses outside of your home institution.
Please check the Residency Policy at your home institution – students are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours in residence at their home institution, so as long as you complete that policy then the academic college leadership (Dean, Associate Dean or Assistant Dean) may waive the final 30-hour residency requirement since UHS Pathways program was designed for students in their final 30 hours.
You can use the public Class Schedule link to review the class schedule for each of the institutions. Just use the drop down, and select the institution you would like to view.
Note: If you receive error “You are not authorized to access this component” then just make sure you log out of E-Services because this is a “public” site and does not require you to be logged in.
Please visit our step-by-step instructions on our homepage. It is the responsibility of a student to initiate this process and follow up that their application is being routed.
To take courses at another UH institution, you’ll need to connect with your academic advisor at your home institution first; this is to help confirm that the course(s) you are seeking to take work with you degree plan. From there, the academic college leadership (Dean, Associate Dean or Assistant Dean) will sign the Pathways form designating their approval.
If a course is closed, the options may be limited. Students at the institution where a student is looking to take a course have priority in enrollment. If you are considering an application for the UH Pathway programs, it is highly recommended you start the process early!
The UHS Pathways course is an out-of-pocket expense up-front. However for students who typically receive financial aid at their home institution. They can provide proof of payment for the UHS Pathways course to their Home UHS Pathways Coordinator, and the Coordinator will route the Financial Aid Consortium document. This document will allow your Home Financial Aid office to “include the hours” enrolled toward the overall packaging. However, reimbursement does not occur until after the semester has started and the UHS Pathways course has been confirmed paid.
This may be possible, it is recommended you check with your veteran services staff at your home institution to verify your options. Some veteran/military benefits will enable you to use a Parent Institution Form/Document to cover the cost of the course at the Host institution.
Typically 3-5 business days. Basically, after your completed UHS Pathways Application is routed to the UHS Pathways Coordinator at your Home Institution, then it is processed within 1-2 days. The document is then routed to the UHS Pathways Coordinator at the Host institution. These are typically processed within 1-3 business days depending on the time of the semester. Please note, we must be in an Open or Late Registration process in order to be processed.
You can use your 7-digit student ID number and password to access your Student Center across the UH System. This is a universal ID within the University of Houston System.
Check with the host, but most institutions will require you to pay for parking if you are attending classes on their campus.
