New Board of Regents Appointed
Dear UH System Faculty and Staff,
I hope this message finds you well and that your semester was a success. As we close out the year, I am pleased to share that Governor Greg Abbott has made four appointments to the University of Houston System Board of Regents.
I extend our warmest welcome to Alonzo Cantu, Bryan Clark, Tommy Lucas and Lynden Rose.
Regent Alonzo Cantu of McAllen, TX returns to the Board of Regents having offered exceptional service and expertise to the UH System, elevating our institutions through student enrichment initiatives, advocacy and strategic management. The University of Houston alumnus is CEO and president of Cantu Construction & Development Company, chairman of Lone Star National Bank and a board member at DHR Health. He also serves as chairman and founder of Valley Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships. His term will expire on Aug. 31, 2031.
Regent Bryan Clark is a native Houstonian who earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting and Marketing from UH. Clark is a principal at Doeren Mayhew Advisors, LLC, one of the largest CPA firms in Houston. He is a lifetime member of the UH Alumni Association and a faithful supporter of UH Athletics. Clark replaces former Regent Tammy Murphy, a UH-Victoria alumna who vacated her position upon UHV’s departure from the System. Regent Clark will serve the remainder of her term which expires on Aug. 31, 2029.
Regent Tommy Lucas, of Brenham, Texas, earned his Doctor of Optometry degree from UH. He is co-founder and president of VIEW Optometry, former president of the Texas Optometric Association and a member of the American Optometric Association. Lucas is also co-founder of Elevate Digital Optics, an ophthalmic lens manufacturer in Dallas. Lucas replaces John McCall, whose term expired, and will serve a six-year term ending Aug. 31, 2031.
Regent Lynden Rose returns to the Board of Regents, a post he held from 2004 to 2009. Rose earned his Bachelor of Science in Political Science and his Juris Doctor from UH. A former athlete, Rose was co-captain of the legendary UH basketball team known as “Phi Slama Jama.” Today, he is an attorney and Of Counsel with HooverSlovacek LLP and Honorary Consul for the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in the State of Texas. He is also vice chairman of the Harris County Houston Sports Authority Board and director of the Board for TDECU. He replaces former Regent Durga Agrawal whose term expired on Dec. 12.
The new regents join Regent Jack Moore, Chairman; Regent Ricky Raven, Vice Chairman; Regent Gregory King, Secretary; Regent Beth Madison; Regent Patrick Fertitta; and Student Regent Adrian Caraves.
Thank you for joining me in welcoming our new regents and for recognizing the continued service of our current regents. Together, they will drive us to meet our goals to be nationally competitive, achieve greater student success and further advance our community.
Warm regards,
Renu Khator
