“Building on a period of remarkable growth, the University of Houston System welcomes four new members to its Board of Regents — accomplished leaders who will continue driving the system’s push for academic and research excellence.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced the appointments of Alonzo Cantu, Bryan Clark, Tommy Lucas and Lynden Rose on Dec. 12. They will each serve six-year terms through Aug. 31, 2031, except for Clark who will serve the remainder of an unexpired term through Aug. 31, 2029.

Alonzo Cantu, who earned his Bachelor of Arts in finance at the University of Houston, was first
appointed to the Board in 2019. Cantu is chairman and CEO of Cantu Construction. He
is credited by many as being a driving force behind the transformation of the business
landscape of South Texas, the third-fastest growing metropolitan area in the U.S.,
as a banker, developer, philanthropist and dedicated community organizer.
Bryan F. Clark is a native Houstonian who earned his Bachelor of Business Administration at the
University of Houston in 1990, double majoring in accounting and marketing. Clark,
a principal at Doeren Mayhew Advisors, LLC, one of the largest CPA firms in Houston,
is a lifetime member of the UH Alumni Association, a longtime supporter of UH Athletics
and a member of the Nantz Leadership Society. He replaces Tammy Murphy, who resigned,
and will serve the remainder of her term which expires on Aug. 31, 2029.
Tommy Lucas, O.D., of Brenham, Texas, earned his Doctor of Optometry at the University of Houston in
2006. Lucas is the co-founder of VIEW Optometry, a multi-location eye care practice
and doctor alliance, and a former president of the Texas Optometric Association. Additionally,
he is the co-founder of Elevate Digital Optics, an ophthalmic lens manufacturer in
Dallas. Lucas replaces John McCall, whose term expired, and will serve a six-year
term ending Aug. 31, 2031.
Lynden B. Rose, Sr., is an attorney with HooverSlovacek LLP. Rose is the vice chairman of the Harris
County Houston Sports Authority Board, director of the board for TDECU and a trustee
for the College of Biblical Studies. Additionally, he was appointed by the Bahamas
Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Honorary Consul General to Houston and the Southwest
Region of the United States. Rose received a bachelor's degree in political science
at the University of Houston, a law degree from the UH Law Center, and was captain
of UH’s “Phi Slama Jama” basketball team in 1982.
The Board of Regents oversees the three universities that make up the UH System (University of Houston,
University of Houston-Clear Lake and University of Houston-Downtown) and is composed
of nine regular members appointed by the Governor for six-year terms and a student
regent, who serves a one-year appointment.
