The University of Houston System is poised to build on its extraordinary momentum with the appointment of Patrick Fertitta as the newest member of the Board of Regents, a distinguished leader who will ensure the UH System continues its rise as a powerhouse of academic excellence, research and innovation.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Fertitta’s appointment earlier today.

“Patrick Fertitta is an exceptional leader with a deep commitment to advancing Greater Houston. He understands how our Universities enrich the region, and his strategic insight and fresh perspective will help elevate our national profile, strengthen student success and advance our community.”

Regent Fertitta is director of Fertitta Entertainment, a global leader in dining, hospitality, entertainment and gaming with over 600 properties and 50,000 employees worldwide. It is the parent company of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, Landry’s restaurant group and Golden Nugget Hotels and Casinos. He is also the director of the Space City Home Network and serves as an alternate governor on the NBA’s Board of Governors.

Recognized by The Athletic in 2024 as one of the nation’s leading young professionals on its “NBA 40 Under 40” list, Fertitta is an emerging leader in both professional sports and community service. In addition to his business endeavors, Fertitta is a volunteer for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Houston, director of the Clutch City Foundation and a member of the Chariots for Children Expansion Committee. He and his family are also longstanding supporters of several Houston institutions, including Houston Children’s Charity, the Houston Police Foundation and the University of Houston.

Fertitta joins current Board members Ricky Raven, Gregory C. King, Beth Madison, Durga Agrawal, Alonzo Cantu, student regent Adrian Caraves and Chairman Jack Moore.

“We are fortunate to have someone as accomplished as Patrick Fertitta join the Board of Regents,” said UH System Chairman Jack Moore. “He is a visionary leader whose commitment to excellence will drive the UH System forward and further his father’s legacy.”

The Board of Regents oversees the three universities that make up the UH System (University of Houston, University of Houston-Clear Lake and University of Houston-Downtown) and is composed of nine regular members appointed by the Governor for six-year terms and a student regent, who serves a one-year appointment.

Filling one of the University of Houston System Board of Regent’s vacant positions, Fertitta’s term will run through Aug. 31, 2027.
