Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed University of Houston student Christian A. “Chris” Pepe as the next student regent on the UH System Board of Regents. Pepe’s term began on June 1, and he will serve on the Board until May 31, 2027, representing students across all three UH System universities.

Pepe, a second-generation UH student, is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Political Science. He is active in several student organizations on campus and, as a proud Houstonian of Italian descent, is heavily involved in the city’s Italian American community.

“Being appointed Student Regent is not just an incredible honor, it is a great responsibility,” Pepe said. “I understand the impact higher education can have on students, families and the community. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent students across the UH System and to contribute to decisions that will shape the future of our institutions.”

In addition to his academic and leadership pursuits, Pepe is an entrepreneur, bringing firsthand business experience to his role. After completing his degree, he plans to go to law school with the goal of working in public policy in Austin or Washington, D.C.

“I am deeply grateful to Gov. Abbott, and everyone involved in this appointment for the trust they have placed in me. I look forward to working with Chancellor Khator, the Board of Regents and university leadership to continue the UH System’s mission while giving a voice to my fellow students.”

Pepe, who is replacing UH-Clear Lake graduate student Adrian Caraves, will work with the members of the UH System Board of Regents to make governing decisions for the System and each of its three universities. Although he won’t have a vote on the nine-member board, he will be the voice of the system’s nearly 70,000 students.
